A travel startup and app that guides tourists to less-visited places, supports local entrepreneurs and makes the city more liveable. Protopia Studio was venture co-founder and responsible for strategy, design and product development.
Amsterdam saw increasing numbers of tourists concentrated in the city centre, putting social structures under pressure and excluding local entrepreneurs from economic benefits.
Protopia Studio developed the app, back end, business model and gamification concept. We were responsible for strategy, design, product ownership, partnerships and funding. Together with the municipality and local partners, the app was tested and further developed through Startup in Residence.
The Wander app launched in 2017 and encouraged visitors to spread across the city, strengthened social cohesion and increased economic opportunities for small entrepreneurs. The app also generated insights for urban management and tourism planning.
