Protopia Studio designed a sketch for a food cooperative based on permaculture principles. The plan includes a market garden, food forest, education hub and cooperative market. It creates a blueprint for local area cooperatives that generate ecological, social and educational synergies.
The new residential district at the Marineterrein called for innovative ideas for sustainable, inclusive and regenerative neighbourhood facilities. How can food production be integrated into the city while contributing to biodiversity, social cohesion and circular flows?
Protopia Studio developed a sketch design for a cooperative food system in the neighbourhood. The plan combines permaculture principles, collective management and educational functions. We designed a pavilion as a central meeting place, connected to a market garden, food forest, local compost collection and water retention.
The design shows how local area cooperatives can function as new commons: residents collectively manage regenerative facilities and benefit from local food, education and a strong social structure. The approach strengthens biodiversity, restores soil, increases climate resilience and fosters ownership and connection in the neighbourhood. The model is scalable and can be applied in multiple urban districts.
