Research and vision development for the City of Amsterdam, exploring the city as a regenerative ecosystem. The project resulted in design principles, models and policy proposals that help the city transform towards a regenerative society.
The City of Amsterdam is looking for ways to make urban development more sustainable and regenerative. The challenge: how can the city not only cause less harm, but actively contribute to the restoration of ecological and social systems?
Protopia Studio researched international best practices and analysed existing policy and initiatives across the city. From this, we developed a framework of eight design principles, a layered urban model and a database of examples.
The project delivered an inspiring vision and concrete tools for policy, design and practice. The central idea: a regenerative city gives back more than it takes. It restores and strengthens the ecological and social systems it is part of. The work helped the City of Amsterdam translate regenerative principles into its own urban context and shape future policy and initiatives. New concepts were proposed for Amsterdam, from soil improvement and cooperative food systems to regenerative procurement and educational programmes.
